Orvieto Weekly Market, Piazza del Popolo
Every Thursday morning Piazza del Popolo transforms into one of central Umbria's most authentic weekly markets, where farmers from the surrounding Orvietano hills sell produce they harvested the day before. It is the best place in town to shop like a local and stock up on provisions for a picnic on the plateau.
What You'll Find at the Stalls
Expect seasonal Umbrian produce in abundance: fat porcini mushrooms in autumn, white truffles from the nearby Tiber valley between November and March, hand-rolled pici pasta, local Orvieto Classico wine by the unlabelled litre, and wheels of aged Pecorino from shepherds who have been selling at this market for decades.
Alongside food, stalls sell household linens, cheap ceramics, seeds, hardware and clothing — a genuine working market rather than a tourist showcase. Arrive before 09:00 for the best selection and the most animated atmosphere.
The Piazza Itself
Piazza del Popolo is anchored by the 13th-century Palazzo del Popolo, a handsome Gothic-Romanesque civic palace in golden tufa stone that now serves as a conference centre. The building's open ground-floor loggia gives the square a theatrical backdrop on market day.
A handful of café tables spill out from the bars on the piazza's edge — grab a cornetto and a cappuccino and watch the transactions unfold. The market winds down by 13:00, after which the square returns to its usual quiet self.
