Pont George V & the Loire Embankment
The elegant stone arches of the Pont George V — the oldest bridge in Orléans, dating from 1760 — frame one of the most photogenic river panoramas in the entire Loire Valley. Stand at its midpoint at golden hour and you'll understand why UNESCO gave this river its World Heritage status.
The Bridge and Its History
Completed under Louis XV, the Pont George V replaced a medieval wooden bridge and immediately became the symbolic gateway to the city. Its nine arches of pale tufa stone glow warm honey-gold in evening light, and the views upstream to the cathedral towers and downstream to the wild sandbanks are equally spectacular.
The bridge was heavily damaged during World War II and meticulously restored — look for the commemorative plaques on the southern parapet that mark the liberation of Orléans in August 1944.
The Embankment Walk
On the north bank, the Quai du Châtelet and Quai Barentin form a broad riverside promenade lined with plane trees, perfect for a morning jog or an evening stroll. In summer, the city's Loire en Fête festival transforms the quays into a beach, with sand, deck chairs and open-air concerts.
Walk west along the quais to reach the wild Île Charlemagne — a sliver of wooded island in the middle of the river accessible by a footbridge — where herons fish in the shallows and the city noise fades completely.
Best Times to Visit
Sunset is the undisputed prime time: the western sky turns the Loire into hammered copper and the cathedral silhouette darkens dramatically behind you. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset and claim a spot on the bridge parapet.
Early morning in spring is equally magical — mist rises off the water, swans drift under the arches, and you'll have the bridge almost entirely to yourself. Bring a camera with a wide-angle lens.
