Museo Municipal Luis Chamizo & Biblioteca Municipal
Housed inside the former Convento de San Juan de Dios, Olivenza's municipal library and attached museum occupy one of the most beautiful Baroque interiors in southern Extremadura — a space that most visitors drive straight past without realising it is open to the public.
The most beautiful library you've never heard of
The Biblioteca Municipal preserves a serene 18th-century cloister at its heart, with terracotta-tiled arcades and a central well that has barely changed since the friars left. The reading room retains its original timber shelving, and the collection includes rare Portuguese-language volumes that reflect the town's dual heritage.
Admission is free and the staff are genuinely welcoming to curious visitors who simply want to look around. It is a working library, so respectful quiet is expected, but there is no barrier to wandering the cloister and admiring the architecture.
The ethnographic collections next door
Adjacent to the library, the Luis Chamizo ethnographic museum fills the former convent's larger rooms with reconstructed domestic interiors, agricultural equipment and examples of the distinctive Olivenza lace-making tradition known as encaje de bolillos. The lace panels on display are extraordinarily fine and represent a craft still practised by a small community of local women.
Look out for the collection of traditional Portuguese-Extremaduran ceramic water jars and the hand-painted ox yokes — objects that bridge the agricultural worlds on both sides of the nearby border.
