Marché de Nuits-Saint-Georges (Friday Morning Market)
Every Friday morning the Place de la République and surrounding streets fill with the earthy perfume of rotisserie chicken, ripe Époisses cheese and fresh-cut flowers — this is the weekly market that locals actually shop at, not a tourist showcase. Arrive by 9 am to catch producers before they sell out.
What to Look For
The cheese stalls are the undisputed highlight: look for Époisses de Bourgogne AOC in its characteristic orange-rinded rounds, along with Langres and the lesser-known Soumaintrain, all made within an hour's drive. A vendor near the church typically sells aged Comté alongside local goat cheeses that change with the season — ask for a slice to taste before you commit.
The charcuterie and jambon persillé stalls offer vacuum-packed portions ideal for train travel — jambon persillé, Burgundy's jellied parsley ham, is a regional staple that rarely makes it onto restaurant menus outside the region and is far better bought here than in a supermarket. Pair it with a ficelle (thin baguette) from the boulangerie on Rue du Général de Gaulle for an instant picnic.
Beyond Food
A handful of stalls sell local honey, mustard from small Dijon producers, and blackcurrant (cassis) products — jam, syrup and liqueur — that reflect Burgundy's other great agricultural pride beyond the vine. These make compact, non-fragile gifts that travel well.
The market winds down quickly after 12:30 pm, so don't plan a leisurely lie-in if you want the best selection. The surrounding café terraces on the square are perfect for a post-shop espresso and people-watching as the town returns to its quiet weekday rhythm.
