Piano Grande di Castelluccio
A 20-minute drive from Norcia through a series of hairpin bends delivers you to one of the most surreal landscapes in Europe: the Piano Grande, a vast flat-bottomed glacial plateau sitting at 1,452 m inside the Monti Sibillini National Park. In late May and June it erupts into a mosaic of wild poppies, lentil flowers, cornflowers and orchids that locals call 'la fioritura' — the flowering.
The fioritura phenomenon
The bloom is not a single event but a rolling sequence that begins with poppies in late May and peaks with a full polychrome carpet of colour through June into early July. The exact timing shifts year to year with rainfall and temperature, so check the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini website or local Facebook groups for real-time updates before driving up.
The village of Castelluccio di Norcia, perched on a hillock above the plain, provides the perfect foreground for photographs — a cluster of stone houses floating above a sea of colour.
Walking and winter visits
Outside flowering season the Piano Grande is equally spectacular. In winter it fills with snow and becomes a cross-country ski area, while in autumn the bare plateau reveals its geological bones — a perfectly level ancient lake bed ringed by the jagged Sibillini peaks.
The GEA trail (Grande Escursione Appenninica) crosses the plateau, and a simple 7 km loop walk from Castelluccio village around the rim of the plain takes about 2.5 hours with negligible elevation gain.
