Pont de Nogent-sur-Seine & Seine Riverbanks
The old stone bridge spanning the Seine at Nogent offers one of the most photogenic views in the Aube département — a wide, slow river framed by weeping willows, the church tower beyond and (on clear evenings) a sky that turns the water to hammered copper. It costs nothing and rewards any time of day.
The bridge and its reflections
Standing at the midpoint of the bridge looking upstream, you get a classic French river composition: flat water, stone embankments, poplar lines on the horizon and the silhouette of Saint-Laurent's tower. It is the kind of scene that makes you understand why Corot spent so much time painting the rivers of northern France.
Early morning is best for still reflections and soft mist; late afternoon brings warm directional light that picks out every stone in the bridge parapet. Both are worth setting an alarm for.
Walking the riverbanks
A well-maintained path follows the left bank of the Seine both upstream and downstream from the bridge, passing through riverside gardens, past moored fishing boats and through stands of alder and willow that shelter kingfishers and grey herons.
The walk downstream towards the weir takes about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace and ends at a small picnic area with benches facing the water — an ideal spot to open a bottle of local Rosé des Riceys if you have planned ahead.
