Sagra delle Fragole — Nemi Strawberry Festival
Every year in early June the entire village of Nemi dresses up in Renaissance costume and processes through its narrow streets to celebrate the fragoline harvest in one of the most charming and genuinely local sagre in the Castelli Romani. It's free, it's photogenic, and it smells extraordinary.
What the Festival Involves
The Sagra delle Fragole has been held annually since 1922. The centrepiece is a costumed procession in which local women in 15th-century dress carry large baskets of fresh fragoline through the village streets, distributing them to the crowd. It is unashamedly theatrical and completely sincere.
Live folk music, dancing and craft stalls fill Piazza Roma and Corso Vittorio Emanuele throughout the day. Local producers sell fragoline jam, fragolino liqueur, strawberry gelato and fresh cones from stalls that line every available surface.
The Atmosphere and Crowd
The festival draws Romans escaping the city for the weekend, but it retains a strong local character — you'll see Nemi families who have participated for three generations. The village is small enough that the crowd feels festive rather than overwhelming, even at its busiest around midday.
The medieval lanes and the backdrop of the crater lake make every photograph look effortless. Arrive before 10:00 to walk the streets before the main procession and find the best spots on the balconies and stairways above Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
Planning Your Visit
The exact date shifts annually — check the Comune di Nemi website or the Castelli Romani tourism board (www.castelliromanituristici.it) for the confirmed date each spring. The festival runs from approximately 10:00 to 18:00.
Parking in the village is extremely limited on festival day. The recommended approach is to park in Genzano di Roma (the next town) and take the shuttle bus that operates specifically for the event, or join an organised day trip from Rome.
