Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods)
The Sentiero degli Dei is a 7.8-kilometre ridge walk strung between Agerola and Nocelle, high above the Amalfi Coast, with uninterrupted views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Capri, the Li Galli islands and terraced lemon groves that fall away 600 metres below your feet. It is one of the most visually rewarding day hikes in southern Europe and accessible as a full-day trip from Naples.
The Trail Itself
The path is rated moderate — there are no technical sections, but the terrain is rocky and uneven, and the 300-metre descent into Nocelle at the end demands careful footing. The total walking time is 3–4 hours at a relaxed pace with photo stops. Trail markers are red-and-white CAI blazes painted on rocks.
The first 45 minutes from Agerola climb through chestnut woodland before the ridge opens dramatically onto the coast panorama. The section above Praiano — roughly the midpoint — offers the most vertiginous views: the sea is so far below it appears motionless, and on clear mornings Capri floats like a mirage.
End in Nocelle (a hamlet of 90 people), descend the 1,800 steps to Positano, and catch the SITA bus back along the coast road. This one-way logistics makes the hike flow naturally downhill for its second half.
Getting There from Naples
Take the Circumvesuviana train to Castellammare di Stabia (40 min, €2.80), then the SITA bus to Agerola–Bomerano (1 hr 15 min, €2.50). The whole journey takes around two hours each way but is scenic throughout and far cheaper than a private transfer.
Start no later than 08:30 in summer to finish before midday heat peaks on the exposed ridge. Carry 2 litres of water — there are no reliable water sources on the trail. Trekking poles help significantly on the Nocelle descent.
