Mercado Municipal de Monzón
Tucked into the heart of the old town, Monzón's covered municipal market is where the Somontano countryside lands on a marble slab every weekday morning. Stalls overflow with local peaches and nectarines from the Cinca Medio orchards, artisan cheeses from the pre-Pyrenees and freshly caught river fish.
The produce that defines the region
The Cinca Medio is one of Spain's most productive stone-fruit belts, and the market stalls in summer are a riot of colour — white-fleshed peaches, flat paraguayos, dark-skinned plums and fat cherries piled high. Ask vendors for a taste before you buy; generosity is the house rule here.
Look out for local olive oil from the Somontano DO, sold in unlabelled bottles by small producers who also supply the town's restaurants. A litre makes the most flavoursome and compact souvenir you can carry home.
How to shop like a local
The market is busiest between 9:00 and 11:30 on weekday mornings when stallholders from surrounding villages set up alongside the permanent traders. Saturday morning draws the widest selection, including a small outdoor extension on the adjacent plaza.
Pick up a paper cone of marcona almonds roasted with rosemary from the dry-goods stall near the entrance — they disappear fast. The fishmonger in the far corner sources from the coast three times a week and is the best indicator of what will appear on restaurant menus that evening.
