Marché des Arceaux
Held twice a week beneath the soaring arches of the Aqueduc Saint-Clément on Boulevard des Arceaux, this is Montpellier's most beloved neighbourhood food market — a genuine working market where chefs, students and grandmothers all shop side by side for the same impeccable produce.
The Produce
The stalls are stacked with hyper-seasonal Languedoc produce: fat white asparagus in spring, violet artichokes, garrigues honey, wheels of Pélardon goat's cheese, dried saucisson from the Cévennes and oysters trucked in overnight from the Bassin de Thau just 30 kilometres away.
A handful of stalls specialise in local wine, and it is entirely normal — and encouraged — to taste before you buy. The vendors are knowledgeable and proud; ask where anything comes from and you will get a detailed answer.
The Setting
The market runs directly beneath the lower arches of the Saint-Clément aqueduct, and the combination of ancient stone, dappled light and overflowing vegetable crates is almost unreasonably picturesque. It is one of those rare places where the backdrop genuinely matches the quality of what's being sold.
The surrounding boulevard is lined with café terraces that fill up as the market winds down — grab a table at one of the brasseries on Place Eugène-Laissac and eat your market haul with a glass of Faugères rouge while the stalls pack up around you.
Practical Tips
Saturday is the bigger, livelier market; Tuesday is quieter and slightly cheaper. Both run from around 07:30 to 13:30. Bring a tote bag, small notes and coins, and arrive hungry.
The market is a 15-minute walk from Place de la Comédie or a short ride on tram line 1 to the Arceaux stop. A morning that combines the market with a walk along the aqueduct path makes for a perfect half-day.
