Mercato Settimanale — Thursday Market

Every Thursday morning the streets around Via dell'Opio nel Corso and the lower Piazza Sant'Agnese fill with stalls selling everything from hand-rolled pici pasta to aged Pecorino di Pienza and seasonal porcini mushrooms. This is where Montepulciano residents actually shop, not a tourist set-piece.

What to Buy

The cheese stalls are the undisputed highlight. Look for Pecorino stagionato aged in walnut leaves or ash — a Sienese tradition that gives the rind a distinctive grey bloom and the paste a nutty, grassy depth. Vendors will almost always let you taste before you buy.

In autumn, stalls groan with fresh porcini foraged from the forests around Monte Amiata, sold by the kilo alongside dried funghi misti, truffle paste in small jars, and bottles of local olive oil pressed from Moraiolo and Frantoio olives harvested just weeks earlier.

Beyond the Food

Alongside the food stalls you will find household goods, seasonal clothing, and the occasional antique dealer selling mismatched silverware and old Vino Nobile labels. It is entirely unpretentious and gives you a genuine sense of small-town Tuscan rhythm.

Arrive by 9 am for the best produce and the liveliest atmosphere. By noon most stalls are packing up. Combine the market with a coffee at Bar il Caffè on the Corso — a local institution that has barely changed since the 1970s.
