Le Cycliste & Local Charolais Beef
Montbard sits at the northern edge of Charolais cattle country, and the restaurants here take their beef seriously. Le Cycliste on the main square is the town's most reliable address for a proper Burgundian lunch — generous portions, honest prices, and a wine list that leans hard on Côte d'Or producers.
What to Order
The entrecôte Charolaise is the reason to come: thick-cut, grass-fed beef from the white cattle you'll have seen grazing the meadows on the drive in, cooked à point and served with a Burgundy wine reduction and gratin dauphinois that could convert a vegetarian.
Start with oeufs en meurette — poached eggs in a rich red-wine sauce with lardons and croutons — a dish that sounds simple and tastes like a love letter to Burgundy. The fromage blanc with crème fraîche is the only dessert you need to consider.
The Broader Food Scene
If Le Cycliste is full, the boulangerie on Rue Carnot bakes an exceptional pain de campagne and sells sandwiches made with local jambon persillé — the parsley-flecked ham terrine that is Burgundy's greatest contribution to charcuterie.
Wednesday and Saturday mornings bring a small but excellent producers' market to the Place Carnot where you can buy Époisses cheese (the pungent washed-rind marvel of the region), honey from Morvan beekeepers, and seasonal vegetables grown in the Auxois plain.
