Abbazia di Sant'Antimo
Twelve kilometres south of Montalcino in a valley so quiet you can hear the sheep bells on the hillside, the Abbazia di Sant'Antimo is one of the most perfectly preserved Romanesque abbeys in all of Italy — and on most mornings you can hear Augustinian monks chanting the liturgy of the hours inside its honey-coloured travertine nave.
The Architecture
Built largely in the 12th century from onyx-veined alabaster and pale travertine quarried locally, the abbey glows a warm gold in afternoon light that makes it look almost edible — the carved capitals inside the nave depict Daniel in the lions' den with a vividness that stops you mid-step.
The ambulatory behind the altar is a rare feature for a Tuscan church of this period, borrowed from French Romanesque pilgrimage churches, and it gives the interior an unexpected spaciousness and luminosity.
The Chanting
The Augustinian Canonici Regolari who maintain the abbey sing Gregorian chant at fixed hours: typically Lauds at 07:15, Mass at 09:00 on weekdays (11:00 on Sundays), Vespers at 18:00 and Compline at 20:30 — the acoustics of the stone nave amplify the voices into something genuinely transcendent.
Even travellers with no religious inclination find the experience unexpectedly moving; the combination of medieval stone, slanted light through alabaster windows and unaccompanied male voices in Latin is one of those rare moments when travel delivers exactly what you hoped it might.
Getting There and the Surroundings
The abbey sits in the Starcia valley below the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate; you can drive the 12 km from Montalcino in about 20 minutes on the SP55 road, or walk a beautiful 2-hour trail through vineyards and olive groves that drops 300 metres in altitude.
The valley around the abbey is planted with some of Montalcino's oldest Brunello vineyards — the estate of Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona lies just above the abbey road and offers tastings by appointment.
