Montagnana Saturday Market
Every Saturday morning Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II fills with market stalls selling everything from DOP prosciutto and Colli Euganei wine to handmade ceramics and garden seeds — a genuinely local affair where you are likely to be the only non-Italian speaker in the crowd.
The Market Scene
The stalls fan out from the central piazza and spill along Via Matteotti, giving the whole affair a relaxed, village-fair atmosphere that feels unchanged from decades past. Producers from the surrounding countryside bring seasonal vegetables, fresh eggs, honey and the occasional cage of live chickens.
The food section is the highlight: look for wheels of Monte Veronese cheese, jars of mostarda vicentina (fruit preserved in mustard syrup), and the prized local prosciutto sliced to order from a refrigerated van that parks near the cathedral steps every week.
What to Buy
Beyond food, a cluster of stalls sells household goods, fabric and clothing — the kind of practical market that serves the local community rather than tourists, which means prices are refreshingly honest.
Pick up a bottle of Colli Euganei DOC wine directly from a grower's stall; the Fior d'Arancio (orange-blossom Moscato) is the one to seek out, available in both still and frizzante versions for around €5–7 a bottle.
Pairing the Market with the Cathedral
The market wraps around the base of the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, whose Renaissance façade — attributed to Jacopo Sansovino — provides a magnificent backdrop for browsing. Dip inside between stalls to see the Paolo Veronese altarpiece, then return outside for a coffee at one of the café terraces facing the square.
The whole experience — market, cathedral, espresso, prosciutto tasting — takes about two hours and costs almost nothing, making it the single best free morning you can spend in the Euganean Hills area.
