Centro Storico & Piazza Garibaldi
Monopoli's old town is a compact labyrinth of whitewashed alleys, baroque churches and sun-bleached piazzas that rewards anyone willing to put the map away and simply wander. Unlike Alberobello or Ostuni it has not been polished for tourists, which is exactly its charm.
The piazza as living room
Piazza Garibaldi is the social heartbeat of Monopoli — locals argue over football at the bar tables in the morning, grandmothers wheel trolleys back from the market at noon and teenagers circle the square on scooters after dark. Grab a coffee at one of the old-school bars and just watch.
The cathedral of Maria Santissima della Madia anchors the square with its imposing 18th-century facade. Step inside to see the venerated Byzantine icon of the Madonna della Madia, which according to legend arrived on a floating timber raft in 1117.
Getting lost on purpose
Ducking into the side streets behind the cathedral you'll find arched passageways called 'lamie', vaulted single-room dwellings that date back to medieval times and are now slowly being converted into boutique B&Bs.
Look for the tiny Arco Scoppa gateway near Via Orazio Comes — it's one of the last surviving medieval arches of the original city walls and most visitors walk straight past it.
