Torrejón el Rubio Food Scene
Torrejón el Rubio, the gateway town to Monfragüe just 3 km from the park boundary, punches well above its 1,200-person weight when it comes to honest Extremaduran cooking. This is the place to eat secreto ibérico, slow-cooked migas and torta del Casar cheese before or after a day in the dehesa.
What to Order
Start with torta del Casar, a PDO-protected raw-milk sheep's cheese from nearby Casar de Cáceres whose rind is sliced off like a lid to reveal a runny, intensely savoury interior — scoop it with bread or a spoon. Follow with migas extremeñas, breadcrumbs fried with pimentón, garlic and chunks of chorizo, a shepherd's dish that tastes far more sophisticated than it sounds.
For mains, secreto ibérico — a cut from the shoulder of acorn-fed black Iberian pigs that roam the very dehesa you have been walking through — is the regional star. Grilled simply with rock salt, it has a marbled richness that rivals the best wagyu.
Where to Eat
Restaurante La Posada de Monfragüe on Calle Parque in Torrejón el Rubio is the most reliable sit-down option, with a menu that sources ingredients from local dehesa farms and a wine list focused on Ribera del Guadiana DO bottles from Extremadura's own vineyards.
For something more casual, the bar at Hotel Monfragüe serves montaditos (small open sandwiches) of cured venison and wild boar pâté at the counter from around 12:00 — ideal fuel before a morning trail walk.
