Riberas del Ebro Natural Park (Sobrón Gorge)
Just 12 kilometres south of Miranda de Ebro, the Ebro carves through the Sierra de Árcena in a series of dramatic limestone gorges collectively protected as part of the Parque Natural de los Montes Obarenes–San Zadornil. The Sobrón gorge section is the most accessible and most spectacular — a narrow canyon where the river runs turquoise-green between 200-metre cliffs dusted with griffon vultures.
Hiking the Gorge Trail
The main trail begins at the village of Sobrón and follows the river downstream through the gorge for approximately 6 km before looping back via a higher ridge path. The total circuit is around 10 km with 350 metres of ascent — manageable for any reasonably fit walker in 3–4 hours. The path is well-marked with yellow-and-white GR waymarks.
Spring (April–May) is the best season: the river is high and fast, wildflowers carpet the limestone ledges, and the beech and oak woodland above the gorge is an electric, almost neon green. Autumn (October) is a close second for colour and cooler temperatures.
Wildlife and What to Look For
Griffon vultures are almost guaranteed — look up at the cliff faces and you'll spot the thermals carrying them in lazy circles above the canyon rim. Egyptian vultures and short-toed eagles pass through on migration in spring. Down at water level, patient observers will catch the electric-blue flash of kingfishers working the calmer pools.
The Ebro here also supports otters, though they are shy and most active at dawn and dusk. The limestone walls themselves are worth close inspection: the rock is riddled with fossil shells and the occasional ammonite, evidence that this entire landscape was once a shallow Mesozoic sea.
