Piazza Ferretto
Piazza Ferretto is the grand, arcaded centrepiece of Mestre's old town — a long, café-lined square anchored by the medieval Torre dell'Orologio clock tower that dates to the 14th century. It's the place where the city exhales, and the best introduction to Mestre beyond the train station.
The Square and Its Clock Tower
The Torre dell'Orologio, rebuilt after World War II bombing but faithful to its medieval silhouette, rises at the eastern end of the piazza and serves as the city's most recognisable landmark. Sit at one of the outdoor tables of the historic Caffè Centrale beneath the porticoes and look up at its face as the hour chimes.
The piazza itself is entirely car-free, paved in pale stone, and flanked by elegant 19th- and early-20th-century palazzi whose ground floors host gelaterie, wine bars, and boutiques. On weekend evenings the square fills with the passeggiata — Mestre's leisurely evening stroll ritual.
Exploring the Surrounding Streets
Radiating off the piazza are the narrow streets of the old Mestre centro storico — Via Poerio, Via Palazzo, and Corso del Popolo — lined with independent shops and bacari (Venetian-style wine bars) that serve ombra (small glasses of wine) and cicchetti (bar snacks) from noon onwards.
Don't miss the small church of San Lorenzo, just a short walk north, which shelters a quietly beautiful interior and a 15th-century fresco cycle that most visitors walk straight past.
