Basilique Saint-Michel-Archange
Rising above the old town on a stepped piazza paved in pebble mosaics, Menton's 17th-century basilica is the most theatrical church on the Riviera. Its lemon-yellow and ochre façade glows at sunset like something painted rather than built.
A church built for drama
Consecrated in 1675, Saint-Michel-Archange is the largest Baroque church in the Alpes-Maritimes, and every centimetre of its interior rewards a slow look — gilded altarpieces, trompe-l'œil ceilings and a pipe organ that still rings out during the August chamber-music festival held on the piazza itself.
The forecourt's geometric pebble mosaic, laid in black and white river stones, depicts the Grimaldi coat of arms and draws photographers at every hour of the day. Arrive early morning when the light is cool and the cruise-ship crowds have not yet climbed the hill.
The piazza and its festival
Every August the Festival de Musique de Menton transforms the parvis into an open-air concert hall with the illuminated façade as a backdrop — one of France's oldest chamber-music festivals, running since 1950.
Tickets sell out weeks in advance, so book online through the festival's official site if your visit overlaps with late July or August. Even outside festival season, the square at dusk, with the sea glittering below, is reason enough to make the climb.
