Feria de Medina del Campo
Every September, Medina del Campo resurrects the legendary medieval trade fair that once made it the commercial capital of the Iberian Peninsula. Merchants from across Europe gathered here in the 15th and 16th centuries to set exchange rates for the whole continent — and the modern Feria brings that drama thrillingly back to life.
A Living History Market
The Plaza Mayor and surrounding streets fill with stalls selling hand-tooled leather, ceramics, spices, and textiles, all staffed by vendors in period costume. Blacksmiths hammer iron, herbalists hawk dried plants, and money-changers sit behind wooden tables just as they did five centuries ago.
Street theatre, jousting demonstrations, and period music keep the atmosphere electric from morning until well past midnight. It is one of the most authentically staged historical markets in Castile.
What to Buy and Eat
Look for locally made Castilian leather goods, hand-painted Talavera-style ceramics, and saffron sold by weight from cloth sacks. Prices are competitive and the quality is genuine artisan work rather than mass-produced souvenirs.
Food stalls dish out roasted lamb chops, chorizo al vino, and honey-drizzled torrijas. Pair everything with a clay cup of local Rueda white wine for full Castilian immersion.
