Mercado Artesanal de Maspalomas
Held every Sunday morning in the open-air plaza near the Meloneras promenade, the Mercado Artesanal de Maspalomas is where local artisans, farmers and food producers set up stalls selling everything from hand-thrown pottery to Canarian mojo sauce in recycled jars. It's small, genuine and refreshingly free of the tat that fills resort souvenir shops.
What to Buy
Look for locally produced gofio (the toasted grain flour that is the backbone of Canarian cooking), artisan cheese from inland Gran Canaria farms, and small bottles of mojo rojo and mojo verde — the island's signature red and green pepper sauces that are infinitely better homemade than the supermarket versions.
Handmade jewellery using Canarian volcanic stone (particularly basalt and obsidian), woven palm-leaf baskets and hand-painted ceramic tiles make compact, genuinely local souvenirs that fit easily into a suitcase.
Food and Atmosphere
A cluster of food stalls along one edge of the market sells fresh papas arrugadas (the wrinkled salt-boiled potatoes that are Gran Canaria's most beloved snack) alongside grilled chorizo rolls and freshly squeezed tropical fruit juices using local mangoes and papayas grown in the north of the island.
The market draws a good mix of residents and visitors, giving it an authentic community feel. Arrive before 10 am for the best selection and cooler temperatures; by noon most serious sellers are packing up.
