The Food
Pisto manchego — the region's slow-cooked ratatouille of tomato, courgette, pepper and onion — arrives here in a terracotta cazuela still bubbling, crowned with a runny fried egg from the owner's own hens. Mop it up with thick slices of pan de pueblo and you have understood La Mancha's cuisine in a single dish.
The lamb (cordero manchego) is sourced from a nearby finca and roasted in a wood-fired horno until the skin crackles and the meat falls from the bone. Portions are enormous. Migas — fried breadcrumbs with chorizo and grapes — appear as a starter in winter and are not to be refused under any circumstances.
Wine & Value
The house wine is a young Tempranillo from a local cooperative, served in a traditional ceramic jug. It is rough around the edges and absolutely correct with the food. Ask the waiter for the bodega name and you will be told with quiet pride which village produced it.
A full three-course meal with wine, bread and coffee rarely exceeds €18 per person, making El Cruce one of the most extraordinary-value lunches in Castilla-La Mancha. Book ahead for Sunday lunch when local families fill every table.
