Museo del Vino de Manzanares

Manzanares sits at the heart of one of Spain's largest wine-producing regions, and this dedicated wine museum inside a restored bodega tells the full story — from Roman amphora to modern cooperative cellars. Expect oak barrels, vintage presses and tasting sessions that make the history deliciously hands-on.

Inside the Bodega

The museum occupies a 19th-century stone winery on the edge of town, its thick walls keeping a cool cellar temperature even in the blazing Manchegan summer. Exhibits trace winemaking from the ancient Iberians through the Moorish period right up to the DO La Mancha denomination that now covers more than 160,000 hectares of vineyard.

Antique wooden lagares — the low stone troughs where grapes were once crushed by foot — sit alongside hand-blown glass demijohns and copper stills used for distilling the local Airén grape into aguardiente. Labels, posters and cooperage tools fill every corner, giving the space the feel of a working bodega rather than a sterile gallery.

Tasting & Buying

Most visits end in the tasting room where you can compare a crisp young Airén white, a garnet-red Tempranillo and a sweet Moscatel de Grano Menudo — all produced within a few kilometres of the museum. Staff are local and genuinely passionate, happy to recommend which cooperative to visit next.

A small shop sells bottles at producer prices, making it an excellent place to stock up on DO La Mancha wines before heading home. Look out for limited-edition bottles from Bodegas Ayuso and Bodegas Campos Reales, two of the region's most respected names.
