Cerro de la Popa

Perched on the highest hill in Cartagena at 150 metres, the Convento de la Popa is the city's most commanding viewpoint — and the 17th-century Augustinian convent crowning it is beautiful enough to justify the climb on its own merits. On a clear morning, you can see the entire bay, the Rosario archipelago, and the industrial sweep of Mamonal all at once.

The convent and its legend

Founded in 1607, the Convento Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de la Popa houses a revered statue of the Virgin of La Candelaria, patron of Cartagena, which draws Colombian pilgrims year-round and forms the centrepiece of the city's February Candelaria festival.

The whitewashed cloisters, bougainvillea-draped courtyards, and small museum of colonial religious art are genuinely lovely — give yourself 45 minutes to wander properly rather than rushing to the viewpoint terrace.

Pirates, including the infamous Baron de Pointis, repeatedly targeted this hilltop for its strategic value; the story of the convent's repeated sackings and rebuildings is told through weathered plaques and a knowledgeable on-site guide.

The view itself

From the open terrace on the convent's south side, the geometry of Cartagena unfolds below you: the rust-orange rooftops of Getsemaní, the needle of the Torre del Reloj, the causeway to Bocagrande, and the container ships queuing off Mamonal like patient grey whales.

Arrive between 07:00 and 09:00 to beat tour groups and catch the soft morning light that turns the bay a luminous jade-green — photographers consistently rate this the best natural-light window of the day.

A cold corozo juice from the vendor at the hilltop entrance is the ideal reward after the steep road; the tart, deep-red drink made from a local palm fruit is hyper-regional and delicious.
