Marché de Mâcon — Place aux Herbes & Esplanade Lamartine
Every Saturday morning, Mâcon's riverside esplanade and the old Place aux Herbes erupt into one of the liveliest markets in southern Burgundy, drawing producers from the Mâconnais vineyards, the Bresse plains and the Dombes wetlands. Arrive before 9 am to watch the stalls take shape and catch the best of the Bresse chickens and Saint-Véran cheeses before the crowds descend.
What to Buy and Where to Look
The esplanade along the Saône hosts the bulk of the fruit, vegetable and charcuterie stalls, with several vignerons selling direct from their domaines — look for bottles of Pouilly-Fuissé and Mâcon-Villages priced well below what you'd pay in a wine shop. The inner streets around Place aux Herbes fill with clothing, ceramics and antique brocante sellers that reward a slow browse.
Bresse poultry — the only chicken in the world with its own AOC — appears on at least three stalls, and the fromagers usually carry Époisses, Cîteaux and the local chèvre from the Mâconnais hills. Bring a cool bag if you're planning a picnic on the Saône banks afterwards.
The Market's Rhythm and Atmosphere
The market runs from roughly 7 am to 1 pm and is at its most atmospheric between 8 am and 10 am when the light is low and golden over the river. By midday the cheese sellers are cutting prices and the wine producers are pouring generous tastings to shift the last bottles.
A ring of rotisserie vans perfumes the whole esplanade with roasting chicken and garlic — grab a half-bird with a bag of roasted potatoes for around €8 and eat on the riverside benches watching the Saône traffic drift past.
