Château de Chambord
Rising from a flat forest clearing like a stone hallucination, Chambord is the Loire Valley's most jaw-dropping château — 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces and a double-helix staircase possibly sketched by Leonardo da Vinci himself. No photograph quite prepares you for the first glimpse of its roofline bristling with towers, turrets and chimneys against a wide French sky.
The Double-Helix Staircase
At the heart of the château spirals the famous double-helix staircase, two intertwining flights that allow people to ascend and descend simultaneously without ever meeting — a piece of Renaissance engineering that still baffles architects today.
Climb to the rooftop terrace for a close-up look at the fantastical skyline of lanterns and dormers, and on clear mornings the mist rising off the surrounding 5,440-hectare hunting forest makes the whole scene feel genuinely otherworldly.
The Estate & Wildlife
Chambord sits inside Europe's largest walled forest park, home to red deer, wild boar and Przewalski horses reintroduced to roam the plains near the château walls — spot them at dusk from the observation tower on the D33 road.
Rent a bike at the estate's own hire station and follow the colour-coded trails through the oak forest; the flat terrain makes it easy even for families, and the silence between the trees is a complete contrast to the busy château courtyard.
