Marché de Lisieux — Saturday Market on Place Mitterrand
Every Saturday morning, Place Mitterrand and the surrounding streets transform into one of the most authentic food markets in the Calvados region, drawing local farmers, cheese makers and cider producers from the surrounding bocage countryside. Arrive before 09:00 to watch the stalls being loaded and to snag the best Camembert before the crowds arrive.
What to Buy
The market is a masterclass in Norman produce: look for wheels of Livarot AOP (nicknamed 'The Colonel' for its orange-banded rind) from farms in the nearby Pays d'Auge, alongside runny Pont-l'Évêque and aged Camembert de Normandie. Several stalls also sell homemade butter in hand-rolled pats, a tradition that has almost disappeared elsewhere in France.
Cider and calvados producers from the Route du Cidre villages — Cambremer, Beuvron-en-Auge — regularly set up here, offering free tastings from the back of their vans. Pick up a bottle of pommeau (apple juice and calvados blended together) as a deeply local souvenir.
Beyond the Food
A ring of textile, antique and bric-à-brac stalls surrounds the food section, selling everything from lace tablecloths to vintage enamel dairy signs — the kind of objects that look perfect on an Instagram flat-lay but are genuinely useful at home.
The half-timbered façades of the buildings framing the square give the whole scene a storybook quality; the market has been held here for centuries and the setting has barely changed, save for the occasional food truck selling galettes.
Eating at the Market
Several rotisserie stalls sell whole Norman chickens roasted on open spits with potatoes crisping in the dripping below — buy a quarter chicken wrapped in paper and eat it standing at one of the wooden trestle tables set up near the fountain.
A couple of crêpe stands and a van selling pain au chocolat from a Lisieux boulangerie round out the breakfast options. The whole experience costs almost nothing and gives you a genuine sense of everyday Norman life.
