Mirador del Alto de Galapagar Road (M-505 Ridge)
The ridge road that climbs west out of Las Rozas along the M-505 toward Galapagar delivers one of the most underrated panoramas in the entire Community of Madrid — the capital's distant skyline to the east and the snow-dusted peaks of the Sierra de Guadarrama to the northwest, all visible from a single pull-off point.
The View Itself
On a clear winter morning after snowfall on the sierra, the contrast is almost cinematic: the glass towers of the Cuatro Torres business district glinting on the horizon to your right, and the white flank of Peñalara (2,428 m) dominating the left — all from an elevation of barely 900 metres.
The same spot in golden hour produces warm ochre light across the dehesa below, making it a favourite with Madrid-based landscape photographers who want a quick escape from the city.
When to Go
Winter and early spring offer the clearest air and the best chance of sierra snow; summer haze can reduce visibility significantly, though sunset in July still produces beautiful warm tones over the oak forest.
The autumn equinox period — late September to mid-October — is arguably the most photogenic, when the oak canopy turns amber and the sierra can carry early dustings of snow simultaneously.
Access & Safety
There is a wide, unpaved lay-by on the northern side of the M-505 approximately 3 km west of the Las Rozas / Galapagar municipal boundary; it is unmarked but well-known locally.
The road has no cycle lane at this point, so cyclists should exercise caution; the lay-by itself is safe for parking two or three cars.
