Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel & Old Village Core

Most visitors to Las Rozas head straight for the commercial district near the A-6 motorway and never discover that the original village nucleus — centred on the 16th-century Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel — preserves a quiet, genuinely historic character that feels a world away from the surrounding suburban sprawl.

The Church & Its Square

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel dates in its current form to the 16th century, built in the austere Herreran granite style typical of the Madrid sierra foothills — its square tower is visible from across the old village and makes a striking subject against a blue sky.

The small plaza in front of the church, Plaza de la Constitución, retains its original proportions and is flanked by a handful of traditional two-storey stone houses that give a clear sense of what the village looked like before the 1980s building boom.

Wandering the Casco Antiguo

A 20-minute walk through the casco antiguo (old quarter) along Calle Real and Calle de la Iglesia reveals fragments of original cobblestone paving, old stone water troughs and the occasional house facade with a carved lintel that predates the Spanish Civil War.

The neighbourhood is genuinely lived-in — you're as likely to encounter an elderly resident walking a dog as another tourist, which is part of its charm.

Combining with a Café Stop

The terrace bars on and around Plaza de la Constitución are excellent for a mid-morning vermut or a post-church-visit coffee; Bar La Plaza is a long-standing local favourite with good homemade croquetas.

Visit on a weekday morning for the most peaceful experience; the square fills with locals after Sunday Mass, giving it a lively, community-focused atmosphere that is equally worth seeing.
