Pigra Cable Car & Village Viewpoint
A tiny red cable car hauls you 900 metres above sea level from Argegno in under four minutes, depositing you in the sleepy hamlet of Pigra with one of the most dramatic bird's-eye views of Lake Como's western branch. Almost no tour buses make it up here — the reward is yours almost alone.
The Ride and the Reveal
The Funivia Argegno–Pigra has been running since 1964 and the cabin holds just a handful of passengers, swinging gently over chestnut forests and terraced olive groves as the lake shrinks to a silver ribbon below.
Step out at the top and walk two minutes to the stone wall at the edge of the village: the view south toward Como city and north toward Bellagio's promontory is simply staggering, with the lake's two arms splitting around the mountains like a tuning fork.
Hiking Onward Into the Lariano Triangle
Pigra is a trailhead for the Triangolo Lariano ridge walks — a network of signed paths through alpine meadows connecting villages like Schignano and Lanzo d'Intelvi with panoramic ridgeline stretches that serious hikers rate among Lombardy's finest day walks.
Even if you skip the hiking, sitting at the village's single bar with a Campari spritz while the valley glows gold in late afternoon light is a travel moment worth the €3 cable-car ticket many times over.
The village itself has fewer than 200 residents; a handful of dry-stone farmhouses, a Romanesque church and a water fountain — it is the antidote to every Instagram-crowded spot on the lake below.
