Playa El Tunco
El Tunco is El Salvador's most iconic surf beach, where a dramatic black volcanic-sand shore meets world-class waves that draw riders from across the Americas. The laid-back village behind it hums with open-air bars, hammock hostels and the smell of grilling fish well into the night.
Riding the Waves
The reef break just off the rocky outcrop — the tunco, or pig-shaped rock that gives the beach its name — produces consistent right-handers that work best at mid to high tide, making it ideal for intermediate surfers. Boards and lessons are available from half a dozen outfitters along the main drag for around $20–$30 USD per hour including instruction.
Even if you never touch a board, the spectacle of watching surfers carve against a backdrop of dark sand and Pacific swells at golden hour is reason enough to plant yourself here for an afternoon.
After Dark in El Tunco
When the sun drops behind the horizon in a blaze of orange and violet — a show that locals and visitors alike pause to applaud — the village shifts gear. La Bocana bar fills up first, with cold Pilsener beers and ceviche served on plastic tables just metres from the waterline.
Weekend nights can get lively with fire dancers and DJs, but even on quieter evenings the communal vibe around the beachfront bonfires feels genuinely festive rather than manufactured.
