Strasbourg Christmas Market (Christkindelsmärik)
Running since 1570, the Christkindelsmärik is the oldest Christmas market in France and one of the most atmospheric in Europe, spreading across six squares in the Grande Île with over 300 wooden chalets selling handblown glass ornaments, pain d'épices and steaming mugs of vin chaud. The scent of cinnamon and mulled wine hits you before you even see the lights.
What to Buy & Eat
Hunt for Alsatian-made glass baubles and hand-painted nutcrackers on Place de la Cathédrale, where artisan stalls are curated more strictly than the outer squares. Genuine local craft is labelled 'Artisan d'Alsace' — a useful filter amid the mass-produced imports.
Food-wise, go straight for a flammekueche (thin-crust tarte flambée) from a wood-fired stall, followed by a warm bretzel the size of your face. For something sweet, mannele — a brioche shaped like a little man — appears only in December and is worth every calorie.
Navigating the Six Market Squares
The main hub at Place Broglie hosts the official tree and the oldest stalls; Place du Marché-aux-Poissons is quieter and favoured by locals for its smaller, craftier vendors. Allow at least three hours to circuit all six squares without feeling rushed.
Evening visits after 7 pm, once day-trippers have thinned, reveal the market at its most magical — lights glittering on cobblestones, cathedral floodlit, and queues at the vin chaud stands manageable.
