Girona Cathedral Steps & City Walls Walkway
The 90 broad stone steps climbing to the Catedral de Girona's Baroque façade are one of the most dramatic approaches to any church in Spain, and the reward at the top is a panorama over terracotta rooftops that stretches all the way to the Pyrenees on clear days. Combine them with the adjacent medieval walls for the finest elevated walk in the city.
The Cathedral Steps
The staircase, completed in 1607, rises steeply from Plaça de la Catedral and is wide enough to feel like a stage — which is exactly how Game of Thrones used it, filming several High Sparrow scenes here. Even without the pop-culture connection, the view back over the old town from the top step is worth every second of the climb.
Inside, the cathedral shelters the widest Gothic nave in the world at 23 metres — a jaw-dropping single span that makes Notre-Dame's nave look narrow. The Tapestry of Creation, an 11th-century Romanesque embroidery on display in the treasury, is among the finest medieval textiles anywhere in Europe.
Walking the Medieval Walls
From the cathedral's north flank, stone steps lead up onto the Passeig de la Muralla, a walkway along the top of Girona's intact Roman and medieval walls. The circuit takes about 30 minutes and delivers constantly changing views: the old town on one side, the modern city and green hills on the other.
The highest tower, the Torre de Gironella, sits at the northern end and frames a particularly photogenic shot back toward the cathedral's Romanesque bell tower. Visit at dusk when the stone glows amber and the city lights begin to flicker on below.
