Oltrarno Neighbourhood

Cross the Ponte Vecchio heading south and the city changes register immediately — the Oltrarno ('beyond the Arno') is a working neighbourhood of goldsmiths, furniture restorers, bookbinders and leather workshops operating in the same botteghe their families have occupied for generations. Streets and workshops to seek out

Via Maggio is lined with antique dealers selling everything from Baroque mirrors to 18th-century Tuscan ceramics — the shops are genuine dealers, not souvenir sellers, and browsing is welcomed even if you're not buying.

Sdrucciolo de' Pitti and the streets radiating off Piazza Santo Spirito are where the workshops cluster: look for hand-lettered signs advertising legatoria (bookbinding), corniciaio (framing) and restauro (restoration) — many will let you watch if you ask politely.

The Piazza Santo Spirito itself is the neighbourhood's living room: a daily fruit-and-vegetable market in the morning, aperitivo crowds on the church steps at sunset, and a weekly organic market on the second Sunday of each month.

Where to eat and drink in the Oltrarno

Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina on Piazza Pitti is a tiny wine bar with no kitchen, just excellent Tuscan bottles opened to order and a spread of local cheeses and salumi — the ideal late-afternoon stop after the Palazzo Pitti.

Trattoria Camillo on Borgo San Jacopo has fed Florentines since 1950 and serves a faultless ribollita alongside old-school Florentine mains in a room that hasn't changed since the 1970s; book ahead.

For gelato, Gelateria dei Neri on Via dei Neri (technically just north of the Arno but beloved by Oltrarno locals) makes a fig-and-ricotta flavour in autumn that is among the best things you can eat in Florence.
