Rocca di Scipione dei Rossi

Perched on one of the few gentle hills to interrupt the vast flatness of the Po Plain, the medieval Rocca di Scipione dei Rossi offers a sweeping 360-degree panorama that stretches from the Apennine ridge to the south all the way to the misty plain dissolving northward toward the Po River. It is only 8 km from Fidenza and almost entirely overlooked by visitors.

The Castle and Its History

The Rocca was a stronghold of the Rossi family, one of the most powerful noble dynasties of medieval Parma, and the tower and curtain walls survive in remarkably solid condition. The interior houses a small museum with medieval ceramics, armour fragments, and documents tracing the Rossi's turbulent political fortunes.

The village of Scipione itself — a handful of stone houses clustered around the castle — is the kind of borgo that feels genuinely unchanged. There is a single osteria where locals eat on Sundays, and the pace of life is resolutely medieval.

The View That Makes the Drive Worthwhile

Climb to the top of the tower on a clear morning in autumn or spring and you will see the Apennines dusted with snow to the south, the cathedral towers of Fidenza and Salsomaggiore visible in the middle distance, and the geometric patchwork of wheat fields and poplar windbreaks stretching to the horizon.

The golden-hour light here is extraordinary — the flat plain catches the low sun in a way that photographers find almost unfairly generous. Come in late afternoon and stay for sunset.

Getting There and Combining the Trip

Scipione dei Rossi is a 15-minute drive from Fidenza along the SP10 road toward Salsomaggiore Terme. There is no reliable bus service, so a car or bicycle is necessary — the cycling route through the gentle hills is popular with local cyclists on weekends.

Combine the visit with a stop in Salsomaggiore Terme (5 km further), a handsome Art Nouveau spa town where you can take the thermal waters and admire the extravagant Grand Hotel Porro façade.
