Riserva Naturale del Bosco di Carrega
Twenty kilometres south of Fidenza, the Bosco di Carrega is a 1,200-hectare forest reserve that was once the private hunting ground of Maria Luigia, Duchess of Parma. Today it is the wildest green space within easy reach of the city, threaded with marked trails through oak, hornbeam and sweet-chestnut woodland and centred on a romantic early-19th-century casino di caccia.
Trails & Wildlife
The reserve has 12 marked trails ranging from a 2 km family loop to a 14 km full circuit of the forest. The Sentiero dei Laghi passes a chain of small glacial lakes where grey herons fish at dawn and dusk, and the woodland floor is thick with ferns and wild cyclamen in autumn.
Wild boar, roe deer and red squirrels are common sightings, particularly in the early morning. The forest is managed with minimal intervention, so fallen trees are left to rot and provide habitat — you will hear woodpeckers long before you see them.
The Casino di Caccia & Visitor Centre
At the heart of the reserve stands the neoclassical Casino di Caccia, built for Duchess Maria Luigia in 1816 as a hunting lodge and summer retreat. The building houses a small natural history exhibition and the reserve's visitor centre, which provides free trail maps and information on seasonal wildlife sightings.
A shaded picnic area beside the casino makes this the ideal lunch stop on a longer walk. On summer weekends the park authority runs guided naturalist walks departing from the casino at 09:00 — check the Parchi del Ducato website for the current schedule.
