Riserva Naturale del Bosco di Carrega
Just 20 km south of Fidenza, the Bosco di Carrega is a 1,270-hectare nature reserve of oak, hornbeam and alder woodland that was once the private hunting ground of the Bourbon-Parma dukes — and it still feels magnificently wild. Marked trails thread past a ducal casino (hunting lodge), reed-fringed lakes, and meadows where roe deer graze at dusk.
The Trails and What You Will See
The reserve's network of signed trails ranges from a gentle 3 km lakeside loop to a more demanding 12 km circuit that takes in the full perimeter of the woodland. The lakeside path around the Lago della Cassa is the most rewarding for wildlife: grey herons stand motionless in the shallows, kingfishers streak across the water, and in autumn the surrounding oaks turn a deep amber that reflects perfectly in the still surface.
Wild boar, roe deer, foxes, and — if you are very lucky — a European wildcat inhabit the reserve. Dawn and dusk are the best windows; mid-morning on weekdays you may walk for an hour without seeing another person.
The Ducal Casino and Garden
At the heart of the reserve stands the Casino dei Boschi di Carrega, a late-18th-century neoclassical hunting lodge commissioned by Ferdinand I of Bourbon-Parma. The surrounding English-style landscape garden — with its artificial lake, island temple, and grotto — is one of the most atmospheric and least-visited Romantic gardens in northern Italy.
The casino is occasionally open for guided visits and cultural events; check the Parchi del Ducato website for the current programme. Even when the interior is closed, walking the garden perimeter is free and deeply rewarding.
Getting There and When to Go
The reserve is accessed from the village of Sala Baganza, roughly 20 km south of Fidenza via the SP14 road. There is a small car park at the main entrance near Sala Baganza; no reliable public transport serves the reserve directly.
Spring (April–May) brings wildflower meadows and nesting birds; autumn (October–November) delivers the best foliage and mushroom-foraging atmosphere. Avoid summer weekends when the reserve is popular with local families.
