Shorty's Diner, Stanley

Shorty's Diner on Dean Street is the closest thing Stanley has to a beloved local institution — a no-frills, genuinely welcoming spot where islanders and visitors share tables over hearty plates of Falklands lamb, fresh-caught mullet and hand-cut chips. It is the single best place to taste what Falkland Islanders actually eat every day.

What to Order

The Falkland Islands lamb is the undisputed star — raised on open Camp pasture with no feedlots in sight, it is some of the most flavourful grass-fed lamb you will eat anywhere in the world. Order it as a roast, a burger or in a pie and you will understand immediately why islanders are fiercely proud of it.

Falklands mullet (a local sea fish, unrelated to the freshwater species) appears pan-fried on the daily specials board and is mild, flaky and delicious. Wash everything down with a Penguin Ale from the tiny South Atlantic Brewing Company, brewed right here in Stanley.

The Atmosphere & Local Life

Shorty's has the easy, unhurried atmosphere of a place that has never needed to try too hard — mismatched furniture, handwritten specials and staff who will cheerfully tell you which farmer raised the lamb on your plate. It fills up fast at lunch, so arrive by noon or book ahead.

Eating here puts you shoulder to shoulder with oil workers, government staff, visiting scientists from the British Antarctic Survey and the occasional cruise passenger who has found their way off the beaten tourist track — a genuine cross-section of South Atlantic life.
