Mount William Summit, East Falkland

At 342 metres, Mount William is the highest peak immediately behind Stanley and rewards a straightforward hike with a jaw-dropping 360-degree panorama stretching from the capital's candy-coloured rooftops to the open South Atlantic. It also carries the weight of recent history — Argentine and British forces fought fiercely here during the final hours of the 1982 conflict.

The Hike & the View

The ascent from the Bypass Road trailhead takes roughly 2–3 hours return and crosses classic Falklands quartzite 'stone runs' — rivers of pale rock that cascade down the hillside like frozen waterfalls. These geological oddities are unique to the islands and are as photogenic as the summit view itself.

From the top on a clear day you can pick out Stanley Airport, Port William harbour, and the distant peaks of the Wickham Heights. A compass or map app helps identify landmarks across the vast, treeless landscape stretching to every horizon.

History Underfoot

Argentine defensive positions, foxholes and scattered military debris are still visible near the summit ridge — a sobering reminder that this peaceful hilltop was a battlefield in June 1982. Interpretation panels placed by the Falkland Islands Government explain the battle chronology without sensationalising it.

Always stay on marked paths near old military sites; unexploded ordnance has been cleared from designated hiking routes but venturing off-path in the wider Camp is strongly discouraged. The Falkland Islands Government website lists all cleared walking routes.
