Parco del Delta del Po, Comacchio Valleys
The Po Delta Regional Park stretches across a vast, otherworldly landscape of lagoons, reed beds and salt pans where the Po River fractures into a dozen channels before meeting the Adriatic — and where, between April and September, thousands of greater flamingos turn the shallows a luminous, improbable pink.
The Valli di Comacchio
The brackish lagoons known as the Valli di Comacchio are the ecological heart of the delta and one of the most important wetland bird habitats in Europe, hosting flamingos, herons, egrets, avocets and, during migration seasons, spoonbills and glossy ibis in numbers that would not look out of place in the Camargue.
The best way to experience them is by hiring a flat-bottomed boat (barchino) from the Manifattura dei Marinati visitor centre in Comacchio town, or by joining a guided dawn kayak tour run by operators such as Kayak Delta Po — the light at sunrise over still water with flamingos feeding 50 metres away is the kind of scene that makes you put your camera down and just watch.
Comacchio Town and the Eel Tradition
Comacchio itself is a small, photogenic town of bridges and canals — often called a 'little Venice' — built on 13 islands in the lagoon. Its economy has been tied to eel fishing for 2,000 years, and the Manifattura dei Marinati, a restored 17th-century eel-smoking and curing factory on the main canal, is now a fascinating free museum explaining the tradition.
In autumn (October–November), the annual eel migration from the lagoons to the Sargasso Sea triggers the traditional fishing season; local restaurants serve marinated eel (anguilla marinata) braised in vinegar and bay leaf — a dish that has been eaten here since Roman times and tastes like nothing else.
