The Pyramids of Giza & the Great Sphinx

Standing at the edge of the Sahara just 20 km from downtown Cairo, the Giza Necropolis is the only surviving wonder of the ancient world — and nothing in a photograph fully prepares you for the sheer mass of Khufu's pyramid rising 138 metres from the plateau. Arrive at dawn when the golden light rakes across the limestone blocks and the tour buses are still empty.

Navigating the Plateau

The site covers roughly 2 km² and is best explored on foot or by camel between the three main pyramids — Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure — each with its own satellite queens' pyramids and boat pits. Buy your ticket at the main east gate on Pyramids Road (Al-Haram Street) and note that the interior of Khufu's pyramid requires a separate, limited-quota ticket sold at the gate from 8 am.

The Great Sphinx crouches at the eastern end of the plateau beside Khafre's causeway; the best angle for photography is from the small viewing terrace to the south-east, where you can frame the Sphinx with Khafre's pyramid directly behind its head. The nightly Sound & Light Show (three sessions from 6:30 pm) is kitsch but genuinely atmospheric.

Beating the Crowds & the Heat

Gates open at 8 am and the plateau is noticeably quieter in the first 90 minutes before group tours arrive around 9:30 am. November through February offers the most comfortable temperatures, hovering between 15 °C and 22 °C at midday.

The village of Nazlet El-Semman borders the south side of the plateau; the rooftop terrace of the Panorama Restaurant here gives a free, elevated view of all three pyramids without entering the paid site — useful for a sunset shot after the gates close.
