Grottes de Domme (Cave of Domme)
Directly under the cobblestones of Place de la Halle, a network of natural limestone caves stretches for over 450 metres, studded with stalactites, stalagmites and calcite curtains. The entrance is discreetly tucked beneath the market hall — one of the most surprising underground worlds in the Dordogne.
Inside the Caves
The guided tour (about 40 minutes) leads you through chambers where formations up to 70,000 years old hang from the ceiling in shapes that range from chandeliers to fossilised waterfalls. The temperature holds at a constant 14°C year-round, so bring a light layer even on the hottest August afternoon.
One chamber contains bones of cave bears, woolly mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses discovered during excavations — a reminder that this landscape looked very different 30,000 years ago. The commentary is available in English on request and the guides are genuinely knowledgeable rather than script-readers.
History Above and Below
During the Hundred Years' War, around 1,000 townspeople took refuge in these caves when English forces threatened the bastide above. Graffiti scratched into the cave walls by those sheltering inhabitants — crosses, ships, human figures — is still visible and quietly moving.
The caves were opened to the public in 1927 and have been managed by the local municipality ever since, keeping ticket prices reasonable and crowds manageable compared to the more famous Lascaux or Font-de-Gaume sites nearby.
