Jardin Anglais & Viaduct Viewpoint

Tucked behind the Basilica of Saint-Sauveur, the Jardin Anglais is an unassuming public garden that delivers what is arguably the finest view in all of Dinan — a sweeping panorama over the Rance valley, the medieval viaduct and the wooded gorge below. It costs nothing, takes five minutes to reach from the main square and most visitors walk straight past it.

The View Itself

Stand at the terrace wall on the garden's eastern edge and the whole Rance valley opens up below you: the river glinting silver through dense oak forest, the 19th-century viaduct arching across the gorge, and the Port quarter's rooftops clustered at the water's edge.

On clear days you can see the valley stretching north towards the tidal reaches near Léhon; bring binoculars if you have them, because the detail in the distant tree line is extraordinary in autumn when the foliage turns.

This is the spot locals bring their evening picnics in summer — a baguette, some Breton butter and a bottle of Muscadet, with that view as the backdrop.

The Basilica Next Door

The Basilica of Saint-Sauveur, directly adjacent, is a fascinating architectural hybrid: its Romanesque facade dates from the 12th century while the interior nave is flamboyant Gothic, the two styles colliding in a way that shouldn't work but absolutely does.

Look for the side chapel that reputedly contains the heart of Bertrand du Guesclin, Brittany's national hero — a small urn behind a grille, surprisingly moving for such a modest reliquary.

Entry to the basilica is free and it's usually open daily from 09:00 to 18:00; the cool interior is a welcome refuge on hot summer afternoons.
