Megève Saturday Morning Market
Just 6 kilometres from Demi-Quartier, the weekly Saturday market in Megève's medieval Place de l'Église is one of the most atmospheric in the French Alps — a proper farmers' market where reblochon makers, honey producers and charcutiers from across Haute-Savoie set up stalls by 8 a.m. and sell out of the best things by noon.
What to Buy
Look for fermier reblochon — the raw-milk version stamped with a green casein label — from producers based around the Aravis plateau; it is richer and more complex than the pasteurised supermarket version and travels well wrapped in wax paper for a day.
Tome des Bauges AOP, génépi liqueur distilled from alpine wormwood, and jars of myrtille (bilberry) jam harvested from the slopes above Demi-Quartier are all worth loading into your bag.
Beyond the Cheese
Several stalls sell hand-thrown Savoyard pottery — the distinctive dark-glazed fondue sets and raclette dishes make weighty but meaningful souvenirs.
A flower seller near the church steps sources blooms from the Arve valley and usually has bunches of alpine edelweiss (cultivated, not wild-picked) for a few euros — a classic Alps keepsake.
Eating at the Market
The rôtisserie stall near the fountain sells spit-roasted poulet de Bresse by the half-bird with a paper cone of roasted potatoes — eat on the church steps for a very French Saturday morning experience.
Several café terraces around the square open early specifically for market day; Café de la Poste on the square does a reliably good café crème and warm croissant from 7:30 a.m.
