Po River Embankment & Parco del Po
Five minutes' walk south of the old city, the Po River embankment offers a completely different Cremona — a landscape of poplars, sandbanks, fishermen and cycling paths that stretches east and west along the biggest river in Italy. The regional nature reserve, Parco Regionale del Po e del Morbasco, begins here and rewards anyone willing to slow down.
Walking & Cycling the Embankment
A well-maintained cycle path runs along the top of the flood embankment for several kilometres in each direction from the central access point at Piazzale Barzizza. Rent a bike from one of the shops near the station (Cremona Bike is a reliable option on Via Palestro) and head east toward the Isola Pescaroli nature reserve, where oxbow lakes and reed beds shelter grey herons, egrets and, in spring, night herons.
The path is flat, well-signed and almost entirely car-free. A two-hour round trip east to the Lanca di Gerole, a curved oxbow lake rich in waterfowl, is the most rewarding route for first-time visitors.
The River Itself
The Po here is broad, brown and deceptively powerful — the current runs at 3–4 km/h even in summer and the sandbars shift constantly. Local fishermen target catfish, pike and carp from the banks and from small aluminium boats; watching them work is a meditative pleasure.
In summer, some sections of the sandy bank below the embankment are used as informal sunbathing spots by locals, and the light on the water in the late afternoon is genuinely beautiful — warm and hazy in the way that only the Po Valley seems to produce.
Birdwatching & Seasonal Highlights
Spring (April–May) brings migrating waders and warblers through the riverside woodland, and the dawn chorus in the poplar groves is remarkable. Autumn is the best season for wildfowl: teal, wigeon and pochard gather on the oxbow lakes from October onward.
The visitor centre for Parco del Po e del Morbasco is at Via Massarotti 4 in Cremona and can provide trail maps, birdwatching checklists and guided walk schedules. Entry to the park is free.
