Lago di Fedèra
While most visitors flock to the more accessible Lago di Misurina, the smaller and far quieter Lago di Fedèra sits at 2,060 metres above Cortina, cradled by the pale towers of the Croda da Lago massif. The two-hour hike up from the Pocol plateau rewards you with a perfectly still lake that mirrors the surrounding peaks — and, on a weekday, you may have it almost entirely to yourself.
The Hike Up
The most popular approach starts from the Passo Giau road near the Fedèra trailhead (reachable by car or summer bus from Cortina), following trail number 434 through fragrant alpine meadows thick with gentian and edelweiss in July and August.
The path gains around 400 metres of elevation over roughly 4 kilometres — steep enough to feel earned, but well within the range of any reasonably fit walker wearing proper footwear.
The Lake and Rifugio Croda da Lago
Rifugio Croda da Lago — also known as Rifugio Palmieri — sits right on the lake's northern shore and has been welcoming hikers since 1895. Order a plate of canederli (bread dumplings in broth) and eat it on the terrace while watching the reflection of the Becco di Mezzodì peak shimmer in the water below you.
The lake is a protected nature reserve, so swimming is not permitted, but the stillness and colour of the water — shifting between slate grey and deep turquoise depending on the light — make it one of the most photogenic spots in the entire Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage zone.
Best Time to Visit
Late June through mid-September is the accessible window, with the trail usually snow-free from late June onward; the wildflower bloom peaks in mid-July and the autumn colours in late September are extraordinary.
Avoid weekends in August if solitude is your goal — weekday mornings in July offer the best combination of good light and thin crowds.
