Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora
Rising above the rooftops on the highest point of the old town, this late-Gothic granite church has anchored Colmenar Viejo since the 15th century and is widely considered one of the finest examples of the Madrid school of Gothic architecture. Its honey-coloured stone tower catches the afternoon light in a way that stops photographers mid-stride.
Architecture worth craning your neck for
The three-nave interior shelters a remarkable Renaissance altarpiece and carved choir stalls that survived the turbulence of the 20th century largely intact — a minor miracle in the Sierra foothills.
Look up at the ribbed vaulting and you will notice subtle Mudéjar influences woven into an otherwise Gothic framework, a reminder that medieval Castile was a place of cultural crossroads.
The plaza around it
The broad Plaza de la Constitución that fans out in front of the church doubles as the social heart of the town, ringed by low granite buildings and shaded benches where locals linger after Sunday mass.
On weekday mornings the square is quiet enough to photograph the façade without a single tourist in frame — arrive before 9 am for the best golden-hour light on the stonework.
