Oratorio di San Crescentino, Morra
Drive 12 kilometres east of Città di Castello into the hills above the hamlet of Morra and you find a tiny 16th-century oratory containing a fresco cycle attributed to Raphael's teacher, Timoteo Viti, and possibly touched by the young Raphael himself. The building sits in a field of sunflowers in summer and is almost always empty of other visitors.
The frescoes and the attribution debate
The cycle depicts the life of San Crescentino, a Roman soldier-martyr whose cult was strong in this corner of Umbria. The quality of the figures – especially the mounted saint in the lunette above the door – is startlingly high for such a remote location, and art historians have been arguing about the Raphael connection since Vasari first raised it in the 16th century. The current scholarly consensus leans toward Viti with strong workshop involvement from the young Raphael, which is itself extraordinary.
The oratory is a single small room with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and the frescoes cover every surface. Because the building is rarely heated or cooled, the colours have survived in a state of preservation that larger, more visited churches cannot match.
Getting there and visiting
The oratory is not on any bus route; you need a car or bicycle. From Città di Castello take the SP57 toward Morra and follow the brown heritage signs from the village. The building is managed by the Fondazione Burri and the key is held by a local custodian whose contact details are posted on the door – call ahead to ensure access, especially outside summer.
The surrounding landscape of wooded hills, small farms and the occasional medieval tower is itself worth the drive. Combine the visit with a stop at the Fattoria di Morra, a small agriturismo nearby that sells local olive oil and honey directly from the farm.
