San Bernardino Belvedere above Manarola

Perched on the hillside above Manarola's tightly packed pastel towers, this small terrace beside the ruined church of San Bernardino is where photographers and early risers go to escape the famous — and perpetually packed — Punta Bonfiglio viewpoint below. The reward is a higher, wider panorama that takes in the whole village stack and the open Ligurian Sea.

Getting There

From Manarola's main square, follow the signs for the Sentiero Azzurro uphill, then branch left on the path signed 'Volastra / San Bernardino' before the main trail heads seaward. The climb takes about 15 minutes on a well-maintained mule track through terraced vineyards. The church itself is often locked, but the terrace in front is always accessible.

Go at sunrise or in the golden hour before sunset. In the morning the warm light hits the coloured facades of Manarola directly, turning the village into a glowing mosaic. Bring a tripod if you shoot long exposures — the terrace wall makes a stable rest.

What You'll See

The view encompasses the entire vertical village of Manarola, the natural harbour where fishing boats bob on turquoise water, and the terraced hillsides climbing toward Volastra. On clear days you can see the cape of Punta Mesco to the northwest and the distant outline of the Apuan Alps above Carrara.

Unlike Punta Bonfiglio — which fills with selfie-stick crowds by 9 am — San Bernardino rarely has more than a handful of visitors. You'll often have the whole terrace to yourself in the early morning, accompanied only by the sound of cicadas and the distant clang of a buoy.
