Marché de Charleville-Mézières
The twice-weekly outdoor market that fans across Place Ducale and the surrounding streets is the beating commercial heart of Charleville-Mézières, drawing farmers from across the Ardennes plateau with produce you will struggle to find anywhere else in France. Thursday is the big day, when stalls multiply and the arcades fill with the smell of roasting chickens and fresh-cut herbs.
What to look for
Seek out the sanglier (wild boar) sausages and smoked jambon d'Ardenne — a PGI-protected dry-cured ham that is the region's answer to Parma. Several charcutiers set up near the south arcade and are happy to offer tastings.
Local cheeses from small Ardennais farms, hand-harvested forest mushrooms in season (September–November) and jars of bilberry jam from the high plateau are among the most photogenic and delicious souvenirs you can carry home.
Market logistics
The market runs Tuesday and Thursday mornings, with Thursday being significantly larger. Stalls begin setting up from 07:00 and most pack away by 13:00, so arrive before 11:00 for the best choice.
A handful of hot-food vendors sell galettes, crêpes and grilled meats at the market edge — grab a paper cone of frites and eat them on the square's central benches for an authentically local mid-morning snack.
